The TREND
Model OFF DUTY
The mood of the moment? A cool nonchalance that somehow looks elevated without a whiff of effort. It harkens back to the onset of street style in the early 2010s, when models were captured going to and from the shows in their own casual attire. While the attitude hasn’t changed, there are subtle updates to the uniform’s essential ingredients: skinny jeans are out. Cargos are in. Perfecto leather jackets are out. The sporty moto is in. White t-shirts have given way to white tanks. Combat boots to ballet flats. Who embodies it best? Emily Ratajkowski, Adwoa Aboah, and Vittoria Ceretti. In terms of brands, look to Parisian standouts Ludovic de Saint Sernin and Atlein: the former has garnered cult status for his underground-flavored subversion, while the latter specializes in slinky, ruched jersey dresses that radiate an easy seduction.
The proof is in the pudd…well, this week’s data. With pants and denim up 73% and 41%, respectively, to last Spring, it’s clear the Moda client is falling for the SS’23 collections. For day, expect to find her elevating the model off duty look with a touch of “Moda flair”—be it embellishment, a pop of metallic, a clever finishing, or cool texture. Among the names capturing the mood is Coperni, the Parisian It label turning out cool deconstructed designs with a cheeky edge. The most popular pieces from their Spring ’23 collection are their scuba tops, low-slung trousers and cargos (some featuring built-in underwear that peeks out from the waistband), the boyish pinstripe vest (boasting a perfect fit), and twisted cropped bombers. And of course, the signature Swipe glass bag: a true fashion collectible that also doubles as an art object for the mantel. With the mouth-blown glass bags accounting for 36% of the brand’s Trunkshow sales, it’s a clear top pick for the Moda customer. Of the styles, the gold and crystal-embellished Swipes are currently coming out on top.
Another popular destination for the model off duty look is DES_PHEMMES, whose Cotton-Jersey Wrapped Tank Top, Stone-Washed Denim Cargo Pants, and Embroidered Denim Trousers are among the top sellers of the season thus far. Following closely behind are Zimmermann’s Textured Vest and Bomber Jacket in boucle, Isabel Marant’s metallic silver Ciene Leather Moto Pants and Paciane Cotton-Hemp Cargo Pants, and Chloé’s whipstitched leather jackets and riveted three-piece denim sets. Come evening, the model off duty look favors “the ESD”—or the easy, slinky dress (a great option for when you’re going out but can’t find anything to wear). Australia’s Christopher Esber’s gray Strapless Ruched Maxi is already one of the Trunkshow’s top sellers (and most frequently added to cart) in addition to his denim pieces, including the Two-Tone Waist Maxi and Ghosted Two-Tone Wide-Leg Jeans. New-to-Moda brand Atlein is another key name, whose wrinkle-resistant jersey silhouettes are ESDs—par excellence—and currently available in Trunkshow across a spectrum of colors.
