Student or not, back-to-school season is still something everyone can relate to—and revel in. After all, few times of year afford the pure optimism of a fresh start like the transition from summer into fall.
“When it comes to work, I want to be that woman who wears a heel—with a skirt or a pant—every day. The reality is, most of the time I have to wear a sneaker or flat…functionality is always at the core of how I get dressed,” says Derica Cole Washington, who got her start assisting on big Hollywood features before breaking out solo on the indie film scene. “Oftentimes, I style myself as a way to delve more deeply into the research and character or whatever the story is that I’m telling.” She spent a few years steadily climbing Hollywood’s ladder before landing what is arguably her breakout role—as the costume designer for “Zola” (2020), for which she earned a Costume Designers Guild Award nomination. The rest, as they say, is history.
