A Retreat For Two At The Potlatch Club

Eleuthera stretches 135 miles in length, narrowing to just 35 feet at its slimmest point. The Potlatch Club has a rich history. Originally built as a private residence in 1919, it took on a new life in the 1960s when three Manhattan socialites purchased the property. They transformed it into The Potlatch Club. It was more of an exclusive retreat where friends were welcomed rather than paying guests. During this era, PanAm operated a direct flight from New York to Eleuthera, bringing a stream of glamorous visitors. Among the most notable stories from this time: Paul McCartney honeymooned there with his first wife, Linda, and even wrote She Came in Through the Bathroom Window on Potlatch Club notepaper—there’s even a photograph of the original lyrics.

Today, the spirit of the Potlatch Club lives on, with its new design overseen by Bahamas-based interior designer Amanda Lindroth, known for her signature breezy, island-inspired aesthetic. The resort retains its 1960s jet-set glamour, thanks in part to co-owner Hans Febles, who spent nearly seven years living on the property as he carefully restored it alongside Bruce Loshusan. The attention to detail is evident throughout: the original black-and-white checkered floor, crafted in Nassau in 1919, remains intact; custom wallpaper was designed in collaboration with Bahama Hand Prints (a Nassau-founded textile brand dating back to 1966); vintage wooden rackets from the first iteration of the club are on display; the original piano, missing a few keys, was salvaged from a neighbor’s garage; and a framed copy of Walter Cronkite’s 1960s rooming bill—just $46 a night.
